SolidWorks
as a Design and Business Strategy
by Mark Ortiz from
Ethicon Endo-Surgery
Mr.
Ortiz explained how to give a compelling case for Solidworks from
a Business and from a Design perspective. Many companies have
multiple CAD packages in house. The audience learned how to use
Solidworks to the fullest so as to promote wider adoption of the
software within the company while enhancing their position in
their department. An underlying theme of "It's not what you
have, but what you do with what you have that counts" was
developed based on a very effective illustration that makes this
point strongly. The correlation of this theme to their work on
Solidworks was carefully shown. A true to life experience was
incorporated from Mr. Ortiz’s experience at a former company. He
also presented the substantial benefits of Solidworks over
competing packages based on his background with I-Deas and Pro-E
A
couple of last items:
-
We
are already in the hunt for someone to host the next
meeting. If anybody is willing, please contact the
appropriate person within your organization, then contact
myself or Dave Burbrink. Richards Industries and Harris Corporation have both expressed
an interest in hosting upcoming meetings.
The desire for different meeting locations has been
expressed by the members and is our goal to meet.
(If we don’t have to pay for a meeting facility, it
will allow us to have better door prizes and meals.)
-
The
success of this group depends on the users. We all have
to participate! Please don't think that "someone
else will do it...."
Thank
you,
Steven Henderson, STUG Secretary

Thanks
to all who came and participated in the first officially
recognized SolidWorks' Tri-State User Group. Please allow
this to serve as the summary of the meeting (the minutes) as
well as a quick update with the current direction of our group.
-
We
have adopted the Solidworks proposed agenda with some changes.
The only change is under the section titled
"Membership". Here's the change: "Solidworks
Corporation, Solidworks VARS, Solidworks business partners,
and non-users are welcome to participate but are not eligible
to hold elected positions or vote."
-
The
group will have two chair positions making up the Chair
Committee: A President and a Secretary. These
positions were filled on a voluntary basis by Dave Burbrink
(ANZA, Inc.) and Steve Henderson (E-Prime Group). A
duration has yet to be determined although we are leaning
towards a one year term. This is something that can be
changed as the circumstances for our group evolve.
-
We
will be setting up a STUG website courtesy of E-Prime Group.
We are looking into Yahoo to set up a forum for
discussion there as well. We'll keep everyone posted.
-
The
database has just about been completed and will continually be
revised as new users join.
-
Larry
Moore from Solidworks direct did an approximate one hour
presentation/demo/training session.
-
The
floor was open for general discussion.

take these into consideration and put them to work the best we
can.

We will be representing our group there at the National User
